Filed under: Features , Productivity , web 2.0 I first got word of Live Documents via our trusty tipster, Forboden (Thanks!). And I have to say that it’s impressive! The idea of an online office suite is far from new; Google Docs is the largest player in this market, but of course there’s Zoho and Microsoft Office Live. So, what’s Live Documents’ claim to fame? Basically, they say that their solution is “more powerful than Microsoft Office” and offers “better collaboration than Google Docs.” Those are a couple of hefty statements to make, and I must disagree with one. Still, the product is certainly powerful.

Y Combinator -backed Gantto is launching its easy to use web-based project management application to the public today. Designed to take on Microsoft’s project management software , Gantto focuses on helping users visualize and present project schedules. Gantto, a play on words of ‘gantt chart,’ not only allows you to create project schedules but also lets users turn schedules into presentations. In previous work at a medical robotics company, Gantto’s founders had to manually reproduce their Microsoft Project schedules and charts in PowerPoint presentations when showing their progress in meetings. With Gantto’s application, you can present directly from the application. New users can actually import their projects and data from MS Project, or create their own from scratch. The task management application also features drag and drop functionality, sticky note reminders, and the ability to format presentations by color, font and more. And you can make adjustments in schedules and data on the fly within Gantto during a meeting or discussion. Eventually Gantto will create a collaborative system that incorporates email as well as other communications. MS Project currently has over 20 million users so the market has significant potential. And Gantto is a nice alternative for any bootstrapped business because it’s free, scalable and simple to use. Of course, Gantto faces competition from web-based project management applications such as Basecamp. CrunchBase Information gantto Information provided by CrunchBase

CA Technologies acquisition of a consulting firm gets to the heart of what happens to companies when they begin to adopt virtualization technologies. Andi Mann of CA makes the point in a blog post that the company acquired 4Base Technologies to provide companies with the expertise that is often required to really get the most out of virtualization. Here’s what happens. A company deploys virtualization. They reap the benefits but then they get a bit stuck. To deploy a virtualizaiton infrasrtucture requires expertise that many companies do not have. For CA, 4Base will be the company that helps customers fill that void. Sponsor The acquisition also points to another issue. And that’s adoption. Or should we just call this what it is. And that’s politics. CA is even more blunt. They point to “server huggers,” those members of the IT guard that often have a lot of doubt about virtualization and developing a cloud infrastructure. 4Base will be chartered with going into enterprise companies and helping with staffing and skills issues. The idea is to get people on board who can handle the complexities of making the transition to virtualized environments. That again helps ease the political issues. More informed people do make a difference. There are other aspects to this deal that tell a story about the politics of IT. 4Base brings expertise. For instance, CA cites 4Base and its knowledge of the wide array of hypervisors. This includes VMware, Microsoft, Sun, IBM, Citrix, Red Hat and other platforms. Again, the knowledge exists outside the customer walls. That knowledge needs to move inside. Once that knowledge is in place, the political tensions subside to some degree. We don’t think this is a departure for CA. We see it as a necessary factor of doing business in the enterprise and the company’s increasing focus on the cloud and SasS offerings. CA competes with companies such as IBM, Hewlett-Packard and Oracle. Like IBM, CA is on an acquisition tear. It bought 3Tera and Nimsoft earlier this year, showing its clear intentions to get into the cloud computing market. Discuss
